At least 5 Mozambicans killed in anti-immigrant attacks in South Africa: report

MAPUTO, June 2 (Xinhua) -- At least five Mozambican nationals have been killed in recent anti-immigrant attacks in South Africa, according to a report by the Mozambique News Agency on Monday.

The report said the incidents occurred in Mossel Bay, located in South Africa's Western Cape Province.

As of June 1, about 800 Mozambican citizens had either returned home voluntarily or been repatriated from South Africa, the report said.

It added that some anti-immigration groups have demanded that certain foreign nationals leave South Africa by June 30, raising concerns that the situation could deteriorate further.

The Mozambican government said it would continue to closely monitor developments and take appropriate measures through its consular missions in South Africa and other relevant government agencies.
